restoration and reuse project

The project is driven by the need to increase the number of teaching rooms at the Perugia Academy of Fine Arts. Following the principles of conservative restoration, the West Wing of the St. Francis complex was reorganized functionally and structurally, guaranteeing accessibility also to people with reduced or impeded mobility. Starting from not only a geometric relief of the building, it was necessary the new construction of the roof and the inter-floor ceiling with contextual stiffening and reinforcement of the other load-bearing structures. It was therefore necessary to rethink a vertical connection system that would unify all levels, including a new steel mezzanine floor, embodied in a new interior staircase. In addition, the main elevations, marred by successive interventions over time, were restored to their original geometry.
