The former Convent of San Francesco in Monteleone di Spoleto is a building whose history dates back to the first centuries of the second millennium. The planned intervention sees the need to restore the health of a load-bearing structure fatigued by time, thus endangering the safety and preservation of the building, a symbol of the Italian Borgo. The structural design for the repair and seismic improvement of the building necessarily required a geometric survey of the existing state, including material and historical analysis of the evolutions that have affected it. The starting point for the architectural considerations was precisely the latter: the objective of the design was to guarantee accessibility for users with reduced or impeded mobility to the rooms on levels -1 and 0 destined for exhibition and multifunctional spaces, such as conference rooms, multimedia rooms, etc.. Following the principles of conservative restoration, the intervention was limited to maintaining the historical characteristics of the former monastery by intervening exclusively to eliminate superfetations of poorly conducted late 20th century structural interventions and the recovery of existing frescoes. Of crucial importance is the new vertical connection constituted by a lift shaft created in correspondence of minor rooms on the south elevation, connecting all the intervention levels up to the street level where a new dedicated access has been created.
