On August 13, 2024, Massimo Vitali celebrates 30 years since his first photograph, taken on the beach of Marina di Pietrasanta. Presented by Photolux in Lucca, the exhibition explores his iconic beach series, unveils the full analog archive, and highlights the enduring relevance of his work in capturing Italian society.

The exhibition design involved three distinct rooms of the historic Palazzo, each with unique proportions and character. The goal was to create a lightweight, ephemeral structure that allowed visitors to perceive the entirety of each space—including its frescoes. The result was a self-sufficient “exhibition machine,” inserted within the existing architecture. Using simple tubular frames and construction-site joints, the installation evoked both temporariness and the artist’s ongoing “work in progress.” Each room featured a tailored system: a perimeter structure in Sala Staffieri for a chronological photo series, a central display in Sala Ademollo for large-format works, and a linear setup in the Ammannati Gallery for a monumental print representing the digital archive.
